Skyquilting is a patchwork image of the skies over America, updated
in real time. Snippets of sky from over forty webcams are arranged
in geographic order in a quiltlike grid. These small areas of sky are
promoted from their position as the backgrounds of various touristic
scenes, and linked together to create an image of an expansive
geography. With update times for the individual cams ranging from
one second to several minutes, the composite image tracks the
movement of the sun from the East Coast to the Pacific, the gathering
and slow progress of storm systems, the scudding of clouds, the
occasional flight of bird or plane. Colors change almost imperceptibly,
but a returning visitor finds a perpetually unique skyscape.
