Atlantic Flyways is a continuation of the Augury videos that
I began while in graduate school. While previous works in this series have
been created in the locations I happened to be living, this series
of videos traces the great Atlantic Flyway, the seasonal migration route
that attracts both millions of birds and thousands of birders.
In the project’s earliest conception, the search for meaning,
so important to the augurers of the past, was unimportant. Rather,
the only real meaning lay in the surprising beauty revealed by
the technical process. Clues to other forms of meaning, however,
are suggested by the present-day echoing of the augurers’ practices,
in the observations and studies of ornithologists and birders.
